The International Film Festival of Africa and the Islands

Known as FIFAI for short, this film festival in Le Port celebrates African cinema with indoor and outdoor screenings from both new and established filmmakers. In the competition section, prizes are awarded for the best feature, documentary and short film. It will take place from September 26 to October 4, 2009, on the island of Reunion. This year, one of the films to premier is Sarah Maldoror’s Eïa pour Césaire (homage to foremost Caribbean writer and thinker Aimé Césaire, France, 2009).

Other films by Caribbean directors or on Caribbean subjects include Mariette Montpierre’s Blame it on the tango (US/Guadeloupe, 2009), Sylvaine Dampierre’s Le pays à l’envers (Guadeloupe, 2009), Frantz Voltaire’s Maestro Issa (Haïti, 2009), Shu Aiello’s Cinéastes et papillons (Guadeloupe/France, 2009), Gilles Elie-dit-Cosaque’s Zétwal (Martinique, 2008), Giscard Bouchotte’s La vie rêvée de Sarah (Haïti, 2008), Barbara Jean-Elie’s Bèlè, Tambour vivant (Martinique, 2008), Pascale Obolo’s Calypso at dirty Jim’s (Trinidad & Tobago/Cameroun, 2005), German Kral’s Música cubana (Germany, 2004), and Sarah Maldoror’s Damas (homage to poet Léon-Gontran Damas, French Guyana, 2004).
